Technology

Infingent’s proprietary fire retardant uses nano-particles of silica to reduce the occurrence and spread of flames. Silica is one of the most abundant materials on the surface of the earth and has excellent insulating properties – making our product both cost-effective and eco-friendly.

Our nanostructured silica is a non-halogenated product which is highly effective because of the natural self-insulating properties of amorphous silica – properties which it retains even in its nano-sized form. Moreover, the silica particles carry a flame retardant additive and/or an inert filler which further improves effectiveness.

When Infingent silica is used on any compatible product, the nanoparticles instantly coat its surface which reduces the concentration of polymers which are in contact with the flame. The nano-scale silica particles have high thermal decomposition characteristics and give the surface a much higher heat resistance.

Key Features:

  • Particle Size: 50nm to 20 microns.
  • Surface Chemistry: Hydrophilic, Hydrophobic to Super Hydrophobic.
  • Other Compositions: Silica-Carbon, Silica-Alumina and Silica-Hydroxide nano-composites.
  • Easy to disperse in a variety of polymers.
  • Inherent anticaking properties.
  • Easy to dispose.

The product has been designed for use with polymers like thermoplastics, foams, elastomeric polymers and/or thermosets, and works by giving them improved melt viscosity (fluid resistance). Unlike many other flame retardants, Infingent silica is extremely easy to use – it comes as a free-flowing powder which is easy to handle, administer and store.

The environment-friendly characteristics of the product can be typified by the fact that amorphous silica a common food additive referred to as E551.

Infingent products can be custom-designed to suit the individual needs of all our customers. Important properties of the silica – such as particle size, surface chemistry, composition, etc. – can be controlled to provide an optimum balance between performance, process characteristics and cost.
